In the first match of the third week of theSpanish league season, Levante and Sevilla played out a 1-1 draw. Steven N’Zonzi had put the Andalusians ahead in the first half, but Roberto Camarasa’s strike grabbed a point for Levante. The draw means that Unai Emery’s side are still left looking for their first win of the 2015/16 season.
Real Madrid were in marauding form against Espanyol and ran away 6-0 victors on the back of a sizzling performance from Cristiano Ronaldo who grabbed five goals for the side. The win was second successive for Los Blancos and moved them second in the table behind Barcelona – who are the only team with a 100 per cent record after the first three games of the season.
In a closely fought encounter, newly promoted Sporting Gijon threatened to clinch all three points against Valencia, but Los Che’s perseverance paid off as they grabbed a late winner to move eighth in the table with their first win of the season.
In the biggest match of the week, the winners of the last two league titles, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, went head to head at the Vicente Calderon. The Catalan giants started the game with Lionel Messi – who had missed the final day’s training owing to the birth of his second son – on the bench. Despite the absence of the Argentine in the starting eleven until the hour mark, Barcelona were the dominant team and looked the superior of the two sides. Fernando Torres broke the deadlock in the second half, but Los Rojiblancos’ lead lasted only a few minutes as Neymar struck a majestic free-kick to bring the scores level.
Messi came in on the hour mark and his impact was immediate. He ultimately grabbed his team’s winner to ensure a third successive league win for his side.
A Ruben Castro strike settled Real Betis’ encounter against David Moyes’ Real Sociedad who are yet to score a goal this season.
Villarreal won 3-1 over Granada while reigning Spanish Super Cup champions Athletic Bilbao defeated Getafe by the same margin. The win moved the Yellow Submarine to fourth in the table, while the Basque giants’ first win saw them move to tenth in the standings.
In the most exciting game of the weekend Celta Vigo and Las Palmas played out a 3-3 draw.
Eibar, who were relegated last season only to be reinstated due to the financial irregularities at Elche, remain unbeaten in the league so far. After two successive wins, they held Malaga to a scoreless draw and are fifth in the table – highest of all Basque teams.
In the final match of week three, Deportivo La Coruna defeated Rayo Vallecano three goals to one courtesy of strikes from Celso Borges, Luis Alberto and Lucas. Adri Embarba scored the Madrid outfit’s solitary goal. The win moved Deportivo La Coruna to seventh spot in the league standings – they have drawn their other two games. Meanwhile, Rayo Vallecano are 19th in the table.
